The #1 Reason Your Osoto-Gari Gets Stuffed (And the 10-Second Fix)

If your osoto-gari keeps getting blocked, sprawled on, or just feels weak — there's a 90% chance it's the same mistake.

You're reaping too early.

Most wrestlers and judoka swing their leg before their opponent's weight is committed to the target foot. The throw feels right in your head, but your opponent still has both feet loaded, so they just... step out of it.

The fix:

Before you reap, confirm your opponent's weight is on their right foot (assuming standard right-sided osoto). How?

  1. Pull their sleeve/wrist forward and across — this shifts weight to their lead foot

  2. Drive your chest into their chest — not just your arms, your whole trunk

  3. Wait for the "heaviness" — you'll feel their weight settle. THAT'S your trigger.

The reap is just the finish. The throw is won in the off-balancing.

Drill this: have a partner stand natural. Practice ONLY the pull-and-drive entry 20 times without throwing. Get addicted to feeling that weight shift. Then add the reap.

I break this down frame-by-frame with 6 different entry patterns inside the full course. If you're serious about making osoto your money throw, check it out.
