5 things I wish I knew before my first padel match

Padel looks simple until you're standing on the court wondering why the ball keeps bouncing off the glass behind you.

I've coached hundreds of beginners and these are the mistakes I see every single time:

1. You don't have to hit it hard. Padel rewards placement over power. A soft lob to the back corner beats a smash into the glass 9 times out of 10.

2. The walls are your friend. Unlike tennis, the ball stays in play after hitting the glass. Instead of panicking, let it bounce off the wall and set yourself up for a clean return.

3. Stay at the net. Most beginners hang back at the baseline. In padel, the net position is king. Get up there and control the point.

4. The serve is underhand — and that's a good thing. You don't need a cannon serve. Focus on placement: aim deep and to the corners.

5. Footwork > technique. You can have perfect form but if you're flat-footed, you'll always be a step behind. Small, quick steps. Stay on your toes.

If any of this resonates, I built a full beginner course that takes you from "what is padel?" to confidently playing your first matches. Check it out.
