Stain has to soak into dry timber. Applied over wood that is still damp from cleaning it sits on the surface, dries patchy and peels within a season — so the wash and the stain are different days, not the same afternoon. Old grey timber is cleaned and brightened first, because stain over weathered fibre only makes the grey darker.
