A sermon is meant to proclaim. Counsel is meant to get into the actual marriage, the actual argument, the actual habit you keep repeating. Those are different jobs. When you ask a pulpit to do both, you leave with a principle and no next step.

Most undergraduates are taught to “put it in your own words.” That is how you get a paraphrase that still tracks someone else’s sentence, plus a similarity report you cannot explain.

Synthesis is a different job. You put two or more sources next to each other and write the relationship: where they agree, where they conflict, and what that conflict lets you claim. A summary restates one text. A synthesis makes an argument that did not exist in any single source.

Three rules that hold up in a seminar:

1. One idea per cluster, many voices. If three papers all say the sample was too small, that is one claim with three citations — not three paraphrases.

2. Cite the claim, not the vibe. “Research shows” with no name and year is a red flag. Name the study, then say what you are doing with it.

3. Your sentence must do work. If you can delete your words and the citation still makes the point, you summarized. Add the tension: X finds Y; Z finds the opposite in a larger sample; this paper follows Z because…

Integrity tools will not save a paper that is a stack of restated abstracts. They will catch the copy-paste, the missing year, and the paragraph that suddenly sounds like a different writer. The thinking still has to be yours.
