5 things I wish every parent knew about Montessori before enrolling

After years of running a Montessori program for 3-6 year olds, there are a few things that consistently surprise new families.

1. It's not "free play." Montessori classrooms are deeply structured — children choose their work within a carefully prepared environment. Every material on the shelf has a specific purpose and a specific way it's introduced.

2. Mixed ages is the point. Having 3, 4, and 5 year olds together isn't a budget decision — it's the design. Younger children learn by watching older ones. Older children consolidate their knowledge by teaching.

3. Your child might seem "behind" at first. Montessori children spend a lot of time on practical life — pouring, buttoning, sweeping. These activities build concentration, coordination, and independence that pay off enormously.

4. The teacher's role is different. They observe more than instruct, guiding each child based on individual readiness rather than delivering one-size-fits-all lessons.

5. The real results show up later. Research consistently shows Montessori-educated children develop stronger executive function, creativity, and social skills — but these outcomes emerge over years, not weeks.
