I've photographed hundreds of pets. Here's what most people get wrong when trying to capture their animals:

1. Stop using flash. Natural or diffused light makes fur look soft and eyes look alive. Harsh flash makes everything flat and spooky.

2. Get on their level. The single biggest upgrade to any pet photo is dropping to your pet's eye level. Shooting down at them from standing height is why most pet photos look like surveillance footage.

3. Tire them out first. If you want a calm portrait, take your dog on a walk or play with your cat beforehand. A slightly tired pet = a cooperative model.

4. Use treats, not commands. Holding a treat right above the camera lens gets you those big soulful eyes looking straight into the camera. Way better than yelling "sit!" while they look confused.

5. Burst mode is your best friend. Pets move fast. Take 50 shots, keep 5. That's how the pros do it.
