The 3 exercises every person over 45 should never stop doing

I've spent years studying what keeps people strong, mobile, and independent as they age. Here's what the research keeps pointing back to — three movements that should never leave your program:

1. The Deadlift (or Hip Hinge Variation)

Posterior chain strength is the #1 predictor of functional independence in older adults. You don't need to pull 400lbs. A trap bar deadlift, Romanian deadlift, or even a kettlebell swing done consistently will keep your back, glutes, and hamstrings bulletproof.

2. The Loaded Carry

Farmer's walks, suitcase carries — whatever you call them. They train grip, core stability, and shoulder health simultaneously. Grip strength alone is one of the strongest biomarkers of longevity. If you're not carrying heavy things, start.

3. The Squat (Any Variation)

Goblet squat, front squat, box squat — pick one. If you can get up off the floor without using your hands at 70, you've won. The squat pattern keeps your knees, hips, and ankles healthy for decades.

The common thread? Compound movements that challenge multiple joints and muscles at once. Machines have their place, but these three patterns are non-negotiable.

I write about training, nutrition, and recovery for adults 45+ who refuse to slow down. That's what PeakForm is about.
