The GPA math nobody teaches you before finals week

Quick mental model that saves a lot of panic during finals:

Your final grade isn't one number — it's a weighted average you can reverse-engineer.

Say your class is: Homework 20%, Midterm 30%, Final 50%. You're sitting at a 78% going into finals.

To hit a 90% overall, the math is:

(0.90 - (0.78 - 0.50*current_final_weight_placeholder))...

Okay — the actual formula, cleanly:

Needed Final Score = (Target Grade - Current Grade Before Final) / Final's Weight

Where "Current Grade Before Final" = your homework/midterm grade scaled to their combined weight (in this case 50%).

Plug in real numbers and you either find out you're already safe, or exactly how many points you need to grind for — instead of guessing and either panicking for no reason or coasting into a grade you didn't want.

This is exactly the calculation most students never actually run until it's too late. If you want to stop doing this math by hand every finals week, that's literally what the live GPA calculator inside PeakScholar does — you punch in your weights once and it tells you the number you need before every final, updated in real time as grades come in.

Curious — what's everyone's most brutal weighting scheme this semester? Drop your class breakdown below, happy to help you run the numbers.
