The 10-Minute Monthly Budget That Replaced My Spreadsheet Obsession

I used to spend hours every month in spreadsheets. Categorising every £2 coffee. Colour-coding by merchant. Building pivot tables for my lunch spending.

And I was still stressed about money.

Here's what I eventually figured out: tracking every penny doesn't fix your budget — it just makes you feel busy. The clarity comes from knowing four things before the month starts:

  1. What's coming in — your total income for the month

  2. What's already spoken for — fixed bills that don't change

  3. What you're saving — even a small amount, decided in advance

  4. What's left for everything else — your actual spending money

That's it. No categories for "miscellaneous subscriptions." No guilt spirals when you forget to log a sandwich.

When you plan these four things at the start of each month, something shifts. You stop reacting to money and start directing it. The anxiety drops because you already know the plan.

I built a simple tracker around exactly this approach. No apps to sync. No bank connections. No 47-tab spreadsheet. Just one clean page where you fill in the numbers, see what's left, and move on with your month.

The people who've used it tell me the same thing: "I actually finished my budget for once."

That's the whole point. A budget you'll actually complete is worth more than a complex system you'll abandon by February.

If you're tired of overcomplicating your finances and just want a clear picture of where your money goes each month, this is what I made it for.
