5 Things Killing Small YouTube Channels (That Nobody Talks About)
I've reviewed dozens of YouTube channels under 10K subs. The same mistakes keep showing up.
1. Your first 3 seconds are boring. Not bad — boring. You're starting with "Hey guys, welcome back" instead of a hook that makes someone stop scrolling. Lead with the payoff.
2. Thumbnails that look like everyone else's. If your thumbnail blends into the feed, it doesn't matter how good the video is. High contrast, readable text, clear emotion.
3. No clear niche. Gaming on Monday, vlogs on Wednesday, cooking on Friday. YouTube can't figure out who to recommend you to.
4. Ignoring your analytics. Your audience retention graph is literally a map showing you where people leave. If there's a cliff at 30 seconds, that's your problem — not the algorithm.
5. Posting and praying. No community tab posts, no shorts, no engagement in comments. YouTube rewards creators who keep people on the platform.
