3 things I wish someone told me before my first pickleball game
I've coached dozens of beginners and the same mistakes come up every single time. Here's what would've saved me months:
1. The kitchen is not optional — it's where games are won.
Most beginners camp at the baseline and just bang the ball. Meanwhile, the person who controls the kitchen (the non-volley zone) controls the point. Get comfortable moving forward.
2. A soft game beats a hard game 90% of the time.
Power feels good but placement wins rallies. A well-placed dink is harder to return than a 50mph drive. Learn the soft shots first and you'll beat people who've been playing longer than you.
3. Your paddle grip matters more than your paddle.
Everyone obsesses over which $200 paddle to buy. Meanwhile they're white-knuckling a continental grip and wondering why their backhand is trash. Loosen up, learn the grips, and a $60 paddle will carry you to 4.0.
If you're just starting out and want a structured path to get better fast, Paddle Lab has everything I teach in one place — drills, technique breakdowns, strategy guides, and a community of people on the same journey.
