Why 'just add more volume' is bad advice for a strength plateau

Most lifters who stall out do the same thing: add more sets. It doesn't work, and here's why.

A plateau almost never means "not enough work." It usually means one of three things:

  1. Your recovery capacity is maxed — you're already training at the edge of what your CNS and joints can handle. Adding volume just digs the hole deeper.

  2. Your progression scheme is flat — same weight, same reps, week after week, with no structured overload (double progression, wave loading, etc.).

  3. A weak link is capping the lift — grip capping your deadlift, triceps capping your bench, glute drive capping your squat. More of the same movement won't fix an accessory gap.

The fix isn't more — it's a deload to reset recovery, then a progression scheme with a clear variable to increase every week, plus 1-2 targeted accessories for your actual weak point.

Started Forge Fitness Club to build exactly this kind of programming for intermediate lifters stuck at a wall — structured weekly blocks, form check support, and a community that tracks progress instead of guessing. If you're stalled right now, happy to answer questions here.
