Most collectors find out a set is a bust after they've already opened $200 worth of packs.

Here's the framework I use before cracking a single box:

1. Pull rate math

Before buying, I look at the set's reported pull rates for ultra rares. If the expected value per pack is more than 20% below pack MSRP, it's a singles-buying set — not a cracking set.

2. Chase card ceiling

One hyped card drives most of the set's value. If the chase card is already at $150+ and there are 5+ ways to pull it (alt arts, special illustrations, etc.), the market will dilute fast. Buy singles before the hype peaks.

3. Secondary market timing

New sets almost always drop in value 3–6 weeks after release as supply catches up. If you're not buying for the experience, patience > FOMO.

4. Set longevity

Standard-legal sets hold value better. Rotation kills demand on older sets — always check where the set sits in the rotation cycle before investing.

Most collectors buy packs based on hype. Here's how to actually evaluate a set before you crack a single booster:

1. Check the chase card pull rate, not just the price

A $40 chase card means nothing if it's a 1-in-500 pull. Do the math: if a booster box costs $140 and the EV based on pull rates is $90, you're paying $50 for the experience — fine, as long as you know that going in.

2. Watch the first 72 hours after release

Prices spike at launch due to hype and limited supply. Cards that hold value after day 3 are actually in demand. Cards that crash rode the preview hype train.

3. Look at the set's "floor" cards, not just the hits

Strong bulk = better floor EV. If common/uncommon cards pull $1-2 each, your boxes are worth more than you think.

4. Compare to the last set in the same era

Pokémon runs repeating formats. If the last Scarlet & Violet set had a 1% SIR hit rate, the next one probably will too.
