Why 90% of language learners plateau at the same point (and how to break through)

I've watched hundreds of people start learning a language, get excited for 3 weeks, hit a wall, and quit. It's almost always the same wall: they know words but can't string a sentence together under pressure.

Here's the thing free apps get wrong — they optimize for streaks, not conversation. You can have a 200-day Duolingo streak and still freeze up ordering coffee.

The fix isn't more vocab. It's:

  1. Cap your core vocabulary at ~300 words — the highest-frequency words cover 80% of daily conversation. Drilling 3,000 words before you can use 300 is backwards.

  2. Learn sentence frameworks, not phrases — 5 sentence structures + swappable vocab gets you further than memorizing 100 fixed phrases.

  3. Get reps with real feedback, daily — not just app grading. A human (or a community) telling you "that's close but say it like this" rewires your brain faster than any algorithm.

I built Polyglot Hub around exactly this — structured lessons + a community that actually gives you reps and feedback, not just streak notifications. If you've plateaued before, it's not you, it's the method. Happy to answer questions on this if anyone's stuck.
