Chlorine stops working long before it runs out. Cyanuric acid shields it from sunlight, but every stabilised tablet adds more and nothing except draining takes it away — so the level climbs season after season until the chlorine is present in the water and effectively inert. A pool in that state tests fine and behaves terribly. We measure the ratio rather than the reading, and correct it.
