I wasted months doing it wrong. Here's what would've saved me:

1. You don't need to be a coding genius to land clients.

Most small businesses don't need a custom React app. They need a clean, fast site that converts visitors into customers. Tools like Webflow, Framer, and even WordPress can get you there. Stop overthinking the stack and start shipping.

2. Your portfolio matters more than your resume.

Nobody's going to ask where you went to school. They want to see what you can build. Create 3 solid mock projects for businesses in your target niche. Restaurants, dentists, gyms — whatever. Real-looking work beats credentials every time.

3. Cold outreach still works — if you're not lazy about it.

Don't send "Hey, I do web design, want a website?" Find businesses with terrible sites, record a quick Loom showing what you'd improve, and send it over. Personal effort cuts through the noise.
