Most people get burned on their first portable projector. They either buy a $300 name brand that's not worth half the price, or a $15 mystery box from a random listing that dies in a week.

Here's what actually matters:

1. Native resolution vs. "supported" resolution — If it says "supports 4K" but the native resolution is 480p, you're watching a blurry mess. Look for at least native 1080p.

2. Lumens that aren't fake — Cheap projectors claim 9000 lumens. That's physically impossible at their size and price. Look for ANSI lumens (the real measurement). 200+ ANSI lumens is solid for a portable unit.

3. Keystone correction — If you can't set it up on a perfectly flat surface directly in front of the wall (you won't), you need auto-keystone. Manual keystone is a nightmare.

4. Connectivity — HDMI is table stakes. Wireless screen mirroring (AirPlay, Chromecast built-in) is what separates a good portable projector from a great one.

5. Fan noise — If the fan sounds like a hair dryer, you'll never use it for movies. Under 30dB is the sweet spot.
