The 5 exercises every beginner should learn first (from a PE teacher)
I've taught PE to hundreds of students over the years. Every single one who stuck with fitness long-term had the same thing in common — they nailed the basics before doing anything fancy.
Here are the 5 movements I start every beginner with:
1. Bodyweight Squat — Not just a leg exercise. It teaches you how to use your whole body as one unit. Most beginners sit too far forward. Think "sit back into a chair."
2. Push-Up (modified is fine) — Forget ego. Start on your knees if you need to. A perfect knee push-up beats a sloppy full one every time.
3. Dead Hang — Just grab a bar and hang. Builds grip strength, decompresses your spine, and preps you for pull-ups down the road. Start with 15 seconds.
4. Glute Bridge — Everyone's glutes are asleep from sitting all day. This wakes them up. Squeeze at the top like you're cracking a walnut.
5. Plank — Not for time, for quality. 20 seconds with perfect form (flat back, tight core, no sagging) is better than 2 minutes of shaking and suffering.
Master these five and you'll have the foundation to do literally anything in fitness. That's the approach I take in my Beginner Fitness Program here on Powerful Fitness — real fundamentals, no fluff.
