Why counting your laps is the fastest way to fix your freestyle catch

Most swimmers who've been grinding yards for years have the same problem: they're fit, they're logging the distance, and they're still slow.


The catch is almost always the culprit.


The freestyle catch — specifically the early vertical forearm (EVF) — is the highest-leverage mechanical change you can make. A proper catch anchors your hand in still water and pulls your body over it. A broken catch pushes water sideways. Wasted power, every single length, compounding over an entire season.


So why doesn't fixing it work when people try?


Because they try to think their way through it. Watch a YouTube video, focus on elbow position for one lap, lose it on the next, and conclude it's just a "feel" thing they haven't developed yet.


The real problem: there's no feedback loop.

Here's where lap counting changes everything.


Stroke count per length is one of the oldest coaching tools in competitive swimming — and almost completely ignored by adult swimmers. Here's what it actually measures:


Your stroke count per length is a direct function of stroke length, which is a direct function of catch effectiveness.


When the catch works — when you anchor your hand and pull your body over it — you travel further per stroke. Your count drops.


When the catch is broken — when you push water sideways — you travel less per stroke. The count stays high or climbs.


Pure signal. No guessing. No needing to "feel it." The number tells you whether your drill is working.

The protocol:


  1. Baseline your stroke count per 25 at a comfortable pace. Write it down.

  2. Swim the EVF drill (fingertip drag, high-elbow extension). Count every lap.

  3. Return to full stroke immediately after. Count again.

  4. Look for the transfer — count should drop 1–3 strokes if the drill connected.


If the count doesn't change, the drill isn't landing and you need a cue adjustment. If it drops but climbs back after 2–3 lengths, the pattern isn't anchored yet — you need more volume at that drill before progressing.


This is how technique change actually sticks: targeted motor pattern work with an objective metric confirming whether it's working.


The swimmers who improve fastest aren't training hardest. They're the ones who can measure whether what they're doing is actually working.
