5 things I wish someone told me before I started dancing
I've been teaching dance for years, and the same fears come up with every beginner. Here's what I always tell them on day one:
1. Nobody is watching you as closely as you think. Everyone in the room is focused on their own feet. Seriously.
2. Rhythm isn't something you're born with. It's a skill. Like typing or driving. Some people pick it up faster, but everyone can learn it.
3. The mirror is your best teacher. Watch yourself. It feels weird at first, but it's how you actually improve. Don't just stare at the instructor.
4. Learning one style makes every other style easier. Movement principles transfer. Once your body understands weight shifts and timing, you can pick up almost anything.
5. Consistency beats intensity. 15 minutes a day will get you further than one 3-hour session a week. Your body needs repetition, not marathons.
I built FlowState Dance for people who want to learn but don't know where to start. Step-by-step courses across hip hop, contemporary, Latin, and more — plus a community of other beginners so you're not doing it alone.
If any of this resonated, come check it out.
