The big rental companies are designed to upsell you. Insurance you don't need, gas plans that cost double, "premium" upgrades that are just last year's standard model. Here's how to actually save:

1. Skip the airport counter

Airport rental locations charge 15-30% more due to concession fees. If you can grab a rideshare to an off-airport location, you'll save significantly.

2. Your credit card probably covers insurance

Most Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards include rental car collision coverage. Check yours before paying $25/day for the rental company's CDW.

3. Always fill up before returning

Rental companies charge 2-3x the local gas price for their "refueling service." A 5-minute stop saves you $30-50.

4. Book the smallest car, then hope for an upgrade

Rental companies frequently run out of economy cars and bump you up for free. Book cheap, get lucky.

5. Inspect the car BEFORE you drive off

Take photos of every scratch and dent. Email them to the rental company. This takes 3 minutes and can save you hundreds in bogus damage claims.
