5 brush settings most beginners ignore (that make a huge difference)

I've been making digital art for years, and early on I was frustrated that my work looked flat โ€” even with "pro" brushes.

The problem wasn't the brushes. It was settings I didn't know existed.

Here are 5 that changed everything for me:

1. Pressure opacity vs pressure size

Most beginners leave both on. Try turning off pressure-size and only using pressure-opacity. Your line confidence will skyrocket.

2. Spacing

Default brush spacing is usually way too high. Drop it to 3-5% for smooth, natural-looking strokes. Below 2% and your iPad will cry.

3. Streamline (Procreate)

Crank this up to 40-60% if your lines feel shaky. It smooths your stroke without losing character.

4. Transfer / Flow (Photoshop)

Flow controls paint buildup. Set brush opacity to 100% and control density through flow instead โ€” feels way more like real painting.

5. Shape dynamics angle jitter

For texture brushes, set angle jitter to "Direction" instead of random. Your strokes will follow the canvas naturally.

These settings work with any brush set. But if you want brushes specifically designed with these principles baked in, I put together a starter kit with everything dialed in for beginners.
