5 Roblox map design mistakes that kill your player retention

I've been building Roblox maps for 3 years and these are the patterns I see in every failed game:

1. No clear spawn area. Players load in confused. Your first 5 seconds determine if they stay. Put a tutorial zone or visual path right at spawn.

2. Too many open spaces. Empty terrain = boring. Fill areas with interactive objects, hidden loot, or environmental storytelling. Every room should have a purpose.

3. No difficulty curve. Wave survival maps that start at max difficulty lose 80% of players in wave 2. Start easy. Let them learn the mechanics. Ramp up by wave 5.

4. Copy-paste lighting. Default Roblox lighting looks amateur. Use ColorCorrection, Bloom, and Atmosphere to set a mood. Dark horror maps need fog + low ambient. Bright PvP maps need sharp contrast.

5. No reason to come back. Add progression — unlockable areas, daily rewards, leaderboards, or exclusive skins for returning players. Retention is everything.

I built RoVault to share premium maps, assets, and templates that solve these exact problems. Every map in the vault is designed with retention in mind.
