5 Tools Most Repair Techs Waste Money On (and What to Buy Instead)

Been repairing phones for years. Here's what I've learned about gear:

1. "Professional" screwdriver sets with 100+ bits — You use maybe 8 of them. Get a quality set with just the sizes that matter: Y000, pentalobe, tri-point, Phillips #000, and a few flat heads.

2. Cheap suction cups — They lose grip after a week. Spend a little more on a heavy-duty one with a locking mechanism. It'll last years.

3. Metal spudgers for everything — Metal pry tools have their place, but nylon spudgers prevent 90% of accidental board damage. Use both, but lean nylon.

4. Heat guns over heat mats — Heat mats give you even, controlled heat across the whole display. A heat gun works, but you'll crack more screens learning the technique.

5. Generic replacement screens — Not all aftermarket screens are created equal. The price difference between garbage and quality is usually only $5-10 per unit. Your customers notice.

I built FixKit Supply to solve this exact problem — curated kits with only the tools that actually matter, sourced for quality. No filler, no junk drawer bits.

If you're an independent tech or running a small shop, check it out.
