Why most small business websites don't convert (and how to fix it)

Most local businesses have a website. Almost none of them have a website that actually works.

Here's what I see constantly when I audit a small business site:

1. No clear CTA above the fold

Your homepage has 3 paragraphs about company history and a phone number buried at the bottom. The visitor has no idea what to do. They leave.

2. Mobile is an afterthought

Over 70% of local search traffic is on mobile. If your site loads slow or buttons are tiny, you're losing customers in the first 5 seconds.

3. Generic stock photos

Nothing kills trust faster than photos of people in suits shaking hands that have nothing to do with your actual business.

4. No social proof near the CTA

Reviews and testimonials belong next to the "Contact Us" button — not on a separate "Testimonials" page nobody visits.

5. No email capture

Every visitor who leaves without giving you their email is gone forever. Even a simple "Get our monthly tips" form can 10x your retargeting ability.

These aren't complicated fixes. A focused audit and a few targeted edits can meaningfully move the needle.

If you run a local business and recognize any of these — ask in the comments. Happy to help.
