The #1 reason aspiring PMs fail product sense interviews

Most people prep for PM interviews the wrong way. They memorize frameworks and hope for the best.

Here's the thing — interviewers at top companies don't care if you can recite CIRCLES or AARRR. They care about how you think.

Product sense isn't a framework. It's a muscle. And like any muscle, it only gets stronger with deliberate practice.

The biggest mistake I see:

Jumping to solutions before deeply understanding the user.

When you get a question like "How would you improve Instagram Stories?", most candidates immediately start listing features. Wrong move.

The best candidates spend 60% of their time on:

  • Who is the user?

  • What's their core pain point?

  • What does success look like for them?

Only then do they generate solutions — and they evaluate each one against the user need they identified.

This one shift — user-first thinking — is the difference between a "good" answer and a "hire" answer.

I wrote an entire guide breaking down this approach with real interview examples. If you're serious about landing a PM role, check it out.
