Why 90% of sports bettors lose money (and it's not the picks)
Been building out a picks service across NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, and tennis, and the more data I run, the more obvious this becomes: most bettors don't lose because their picks are bad. They lose because of staking.
Here's the pattern I keep seeing:
Someone hits 3 winners in a row and doubles their unit size on the 4th bet "because they're heating up"
One bad loss and they try to "win it back" same night with a parlay
No fixed bankroll percentage per bet โ sizing is just vibes
A bettor hitting 55% on straight bets with flat 1-2% unit sizing will out-earn someone hitting 60% who sizes emotionally. Variance is the actual opponent, not the sportsbook.
The fix is boring: pick a unit size (1-2% of bankroll), never deviate regardless of streaks, and track every single bet โ even the embarrassing ones. Most people who "run bad" for a month actually just don't have the data to see they're running fine and mismanaging size.
If you want the system I use for picks + staking discipline across all major sports, I just launched it โ Profit Protocol. Not going to spam the link, it's in my profile if you want to look.
