How to Quote an Illustration Project Without Guessing🤔?

Most illustrators price by gut feeling. Here's a simple formula to start from:

(Hours × Your Hourly Rate) + Licensing/Usage Fee + Rush Fee (if any)🥳

Step 1: Set your hourly rate.⏲️

Start with the yearly income you want to take home. Then add your business costs: software subscriptions, hardware, health insurance, self-employment taxes, and slow months. Divide that total by the hours you can realistically bill in a year. It's usually way less than 40 a week, since admin work, emails, and finding clients are unpaid.

Step 2: Estimate your hours honestly.🕧️

Sketches, revision rounds, and file prep all count. Then add a 15-20% buffer, because projects almost always run longer than planned.

Step 3: Add licensing.💳️

A logo used on a billboard is worth more than the same image on a personal blog. The bigger the audience and the longer the use, the higher the fee.

"This is a business advice from me , not tax or legal advice. Check with a CPA or attorney for your own situation."

What's the one thing you always forget to put in a quote? 👇

FAQ: Elka Studio community and toolkit

Quick answers before you join the free community or buy a template.

What is the freelance illustrator community?

A free chat and forum for illustrators talking about pricing, contracts, revisions, and onboarding. Peer discussion, not legal advice. Join free:

What’s in the starter kit?

The Freelance Illustrator Business Starter Kit is a one-time $29 package: the project pricing calculator, standard client contract template, commercial revision policy checklist, and client onboarding intake form.

Are these lawyer-reviewed contracts?

No. Every template is a founding-member starter draft for you to customize. They are not legal advice and are not attorney-reviewed. Have a lawyer in your jurisdiction look at anything you send a client.

What files do I get after checkout?

Access is instant. Open your Elka Studio membership and download from the Files space for what you bought. The contract is PDF and DOCX. The rest are editable templates you copy into the next commission.

Can I buy one tool instead of the kit?

Yes. The calculator is $12, the contract is $15, and the revision checklist and intake form are $9 each. The kit is $29 for all four.

Can I reuse the templates with every client?

Yes. Buy once and customize for each commission. They are for your own freelance practice, not for resale as a template pack.

What is FOUNDING20?

A first-purchase code for 20% off through Oct 16, limited to 50 uses. Enter it at checkout.
