Most clothing brands skip the research and it shows
I've worked with a lot of early clothing brands, and the pattern is always the same: founders pick colors and silhouettes based on vibes, launch, and then wonder why the drop didn't move.
Here's the thing — fashion feels like an art business but it behaves like a data business. The brands that actually scale do three things before they touch a sketchpad:
They map the niche first. Who's already winning in this exact sub-niche, what are they charging, and where's the gap. Not "streetwear" broadly — the specific 2-3 competitors your actual customer is choosing between.
They validate demand before producing. Polls, waitlists, pre-orders — anything that gets a real signal before money goes into fabric and cuts.
They let research drive design, not the other way around. Your mood board should be downstream of what your audience already respects and aspires to, not just what you personally like.
I started PROMA because I kept seeing brands invest in design first and strategy never, which is backwards. If you're building a clothing brand and want a second pair of eyes on your positioning before you commit to a full collection, happy to talk shop in the comments.
