Why your 4-foot haunt prop failed at hour 18
Most oversized outdoor prints don't die on layer 1. They die after you've already burned a full spool.
The usual pattern:
First layer looked fine.
Around 200 mm the corners lifted.
You babysat it. It "settled." Then the top half leaned and the locator tabs no longer meet.
That's not a bad STL. That's heat, draft, and a bed that wasn't holding a 14-hour part.
What actually works on yard-scale FDM:
Print the locator tabs as a 20-minute test. If those warp, stop.
Enclosure or cardboard draft shield. Garage doors opening at hour 12 will wreck PLA.
Split so every mating face sits on the bed. Vertical seams on a 4-foot tombstone are how you get a banana.
Don't coat PLA and put it in the yard without primer. Two weeks of sun and it chalks.
If the printer itself is the problem — skipped layers, heat-creep, clog after a long job — that's a machine issue, not a file issue. Fix the machine before you reprint the prop.
