The competitor pricing move that cost us $40k ARR (and how I would've caught it)

Last year a competitor of mine quietly dropped their price by 35% — not announced, no press release, just a landing page update on a Tuesday afternoon.

By the time we noticed, three enterprise prospects had already signed with them citing "better value." That was roughly $40k ARR gone in a month.

The brutal part? It was fully preventable.

Here's what I track now as a SaaS founder to stay ahead:

1. Pricing page changes

Most tools alert you on new blog posts. Almost none watch the actual pricing page HTML. Check yours manually every 2 weeks — or build something that does it for you.

2. Feature changelog velocity

If a competitor starts shipping 2-3x faster than their usual cadence, that's a signal they're going after a specific market segment. It usually precedes a pricing or positioning change.

3. Job postings

If they're hiring aggressively in Sales, they're about to go upmarket. If they're hiring in CS, they're probably struggling with churn. Job boards are underrated competitive intel.

4. Review site timing

G2 and Capterra reviews spike right after major changes. Monitor new reviews — not the rating, the language people use. You'll spot the new objections before they show up in your own sales calls.

I built Qujino to automate exactly this — daily briefings on competitor pricing, feature changes, and content moves. Happy to answer questions on competitive monitoring if anyone's thinking about this for their own SaaS.
