I've been teaching Quran for years and I see the same patterns over and over. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes — and what to do instead:

1. Skipping the Arabic alphabet

People jump straight to reading surahs before mastering the letters. This creates bad habits that are extremely hard to unlearn. Spend real time with Nooraniyyah or Qa'idah before touching the mushaf.

2. Ignoring Tajweed from the start

"I'll learn Tajweed later" is the #1 thing I hear. But Tajweed isn't decoration — it's how the Quran is meant to be read. Learn the basic rules (Noon Sakinah, Madd, Qalqalah) alongside your reading from day one.

3. Not listening enough

Reading without listening is like learning a language without ever hearing it spoken. Listen to reciters like Mishary Rashid or Al-Husary daily. Your ears train your tongue.

4. Memorizing without understanding

Hifz becomes 10x easier when you understand the meaning. Even basic vocabulary — knowing what "qul," "rabbi," and "alhamdulillah" mean — transforms your connection to the text.

5. Studying alone with no accountability

Self-study plateaus fast. Having a teacher or study circle keeps you consistent and catches mistakes you can't hear in your own recitation.
