The Endurance Progression Most Amateurs Get Backwards

The Endurance Progression Most Amateurs Get Backwards

Most triathletes and cyclists chase intensity too early in their build. Here's the actual order that works:

  1. Weeks 1-4 — Aerobic Base. Zone 2 only. Boring, but this is where your mitochondrial density and fat-burning efficiency actually get built. Skip this and every workout after it is capped.

  2. Weeks 5-8 — Volume before intensity. Add duration first. Your body needs to tolerate time on feet/bike before it can tolerate speed.

  3. Weeks 9-12 — Race-specific work + taper. This is the only phase where intervals and race-pace efforts should dominate. Taper cuts volume ~40-60% in the final 7-10 days while keeping some intensity.

The #1 mistake: doing threshold/VO2 max work in week 2 because it "feels productive." It isn't — it just borrows fitness from your base phase and pays it back with a plateau in month 3.

If you want this mapped out week-by-week with actual sessions, that's exactly what Race-Ready: Endurance Base Builder does. Drop questions below if you're stuck on periodization for an upcoming race.
