If your cold open is longer than 18 words, you do not have one
Most radio and podcast opens waste the only seconds a stranger will give you.
A cold open is one sentence a driver can repeat at a light. Not a welcome. Not a menu. Not “today we are going to talk about.”
The test: 18 words or fewer, one concrete noun from the listener’s world, no question mark.
Bad: “Today we unpack the changing landscape of local radio and what it means for creators.”
Better: “Your 6am board op quit and the log is still empty. Here is the 12-minute save.”
Write twelve opens. Rank them by whether a stranger would replay the clip. Air the winner. Throw the rest out.
That is the whole job before minute one. Everything after is easier if this line is sharp.
