Why 90% of creator 'localization' is just Google Translate with extra steps

Been in the video localization space for a while now, and here's the thing nobody tells you: most creators trying to go global just run their captions through Google Translate and call it a day.

It shows. Spanish-speaking audiences can spot a machine-translated subtitle in the first 5 seconds — idioms come out literal, jokes die, and slang sounds like it was written by someone's uncle. Same with Portuguese and Hindi markets, which have huge, underserved creator-economy audiences right now.

What actually moves the needle:

  • Native speakers, not just fluent ones — tone and slang matter more than grammatical accuracy

  • Dubbing scripts ≠ subtitles — a script written for a voice actor to read needs different pacing and phrasing than on-screen text

  • QA against the actual video, not just the transcript — context changes translation choices constantly

If you're a creator sitting on solid English-speaking numbers and wondering why growth has flattened, international audiences are very likely your next unlock. Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi-speaking markets alone represent hundreds of millions of potential viewers who are actively looking for content in their language.

Started Reach Local to do this properly for creators — happy to answer questions on localization strategy even if you're doing it yourself.
