A short, practical guide for anyone tired of miscommunication and arguments that go nowhere.
1. Most fights aren’t about the real issue. If you keep having the “same fight,” ask: what am I actually upset about, underneath this?
2. The 4 conversations couples avoid: money, time/independence, boundaries, and the future. Pick the one you’ve avoided longest and schedule 20 minutes to raise it calmly.
3. Raise issues without starting a fight: “When [thing happened], I felt [emotion]. What I need is [request].” No blame, just fact, feeling, ask.
4. Listen without getting defensive: repeat back what you heard before responding. People relax once they feel heard.
5. Timing matters: don’t start serious talks when hungry, exhausted, or already upset. Say “This matters, can we talk tonight?”
6. Rebuilding after a bad conversation: just come back to it. “That didn’t go how either of us wanted. Can we try again?”
7. The 5-minute daily check-in: each night ask “What was good today?” and “Anything on your mind about us?” Small check-ins catch problems while they’re still small.
Plain language, no fluff, no therapy jargon. Just what to say and how to say it.
