The 20-minute recit brief (Philippine law school)

Most 1Ls brief like they're writing a thesis. Then they get called and freeze because they can't find the holding.

Here's the version I used in law school and still use when I have to reread a case fast.

Timer: 20 minutes. Not 2 hours.

Minutes 1–3: Read the last two pages first. That's where the court actually decides. Write the holding in one sentence before you touch the facts.

Minutes 4–10: Skim facts only to support that holding. If a fact doesn't change the ruling, it doesn't go in your brief. Five lines. That's it.

Minutes 11–15: Extract the test. Not the story of the case — the rule you can reuse. "X is liable when A, B, and C." That's what the professor wants to hear.

Minutes 16–20: Write your recit hook. One sentence you'd say if you were called first. Practice it out loud once. If you stumble, it's too long.

The students who survive recit are not the ones with the prettiest notebooks. They're the ones who can say the holding without looking down.

If this helped, I built Recit Ready for the rest of the kit — templates, the cold-call script, and an exam issue-spotter. Use it the night before.
