3 tajweed mistakes almost every beginner makes (and how to fix them)

I've been teaching Quran recitation for years, and I see the same 3 mistakes over and over again. Here's what they are and how to correct them:

1. Rushing through letters that require elongation (Madd)

When you see an alif, waw, or ya after a vowel, that's your cue to stretch. Most beginners read it like regular text. Try counting to 2 in your head during each elongation — it'll feel slow at first, but that's the correct pace.

2. Ignoring the difference between similar-sounding letters

س vs ص, ت vs ط, د vs ض — these aren't interchangeable. The "heavy" letters (ص, ط, ض) require your tongue to press against the roof of your mouth. Practice them in isolation before reading full ayahs.

3. Not pausing at stop signs (Waqf)

Those small symbols above the text aren't decorative. ط means you must stop. ج means you can stop or continue. م means don't stop. Ignoring these can actually change the meaning of what you're reciting.

The fix for all of these? Slow down. Record yourself. Listen back. Compare with a qualified reciter.

If you want structured, guided practice with all of this — that's exactly what we built Recite for. Step-by-step tajweed lessons, daily recitation habits, and a community of learners keeping each other accountable.
