Most people start learning Arabic with textbooks and never actually speak.

They memorize grammar tables, study verb conjugations for months, and still freeze up the moment someone says "kifak" to them in Beirut.

Here's the thing — MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) and spoken dialects are two different languages in practice. Nobody on the street speaks MSA. If you only learn MSA, you'll understand Al Jazeera but not your Lebanese neighbor.

After 3 years of tutoring Arabic on Preply, here's what actually works:

1. Start with the dialect you need. If you're going to Lebanon or connecting with Lebanese family, learn Lebanese first. MSA can come later.

2. Listen before you read. Your ears need to adjust to the sounds. Arabic has sounds that don't exist in English — ع, خ, ح — and no textbook can teach you those. You need to hear them over and over.

3. Speak from day one. Even if it's just "marhaba" and "shukran." The goal is to build the muscle memory of actually producing Arabic sounds.

4. Don't skip reading & writing. Once you have basic conversational skills, learning to read Arabic script unlocks everything — menus, signs, songs, texts from friends.
