Why Most Retail Options Traders Lose (And It's Not What You Think)
I've talked to hundreds of retail options traders. The ones who blow up their accounts almost never lose because of a single bad trade.
They lose because they don't have a process.
Here's the pattern I see over and over:
1. The Viral Trade Cycle
Someone posts a screenshot of a 10-bagger on social media. You jump in late. It goes against you. You hold hoping for a reversal. It expires worthless. You feel stupid. You tell yourself "next time will be different."
Next time is exactly the same.
2. The Emotional Escalation
After a loss, you size up to "make it back." You abandon whatever loose rules you had. You chase setups you don't understand. The losses compound — not because the market is unfair, but because your decision-making got worse with every loss.
3. The Identity Void
You don't know what kind of trader you are. You don't have defined rules. You can't tell the difference between a good trade and a lucky trade because you never established criteria for either.
This is the actual profitability problem for retail options traders. It's not that the strategies are wrong — it's that there's no structure underneath.
The Fix
The fix isn't a better strategy. It's a process.
Capital preservation before returns. You can't compound what you've already lost.
Rules before setups. Define your behavior, then find trades that fit.
Review before repetition. Look at process mistakes, not just P&L.
The traders who become consistently profitable aren't smarter. They just built a system and stuck to it long enough for the math to work.
If this resonates, that's exactly what I wrote the ebook about. But even if you never buy it — stop trading without rules. That alone will change your results.
