Been doing interior/exterior painting, drywall/gypsum, and repair work for a while now, and the same 3 mistakes show up over and over on jobs we get called in to fix:

1. Skipping the prep. Paint doesn't fix bad walls — it highlights them. If there's cracked gypsum, nail pops, or old patch jobs underneath, a fresh coat just makes every flaw more visible under new light. Repair first, paint second.

1. Painting over active moisture. Bathrooms, basements, exterior trim near gutters — if there's still moisture getting in, you're painting over a problem that will bubble and peel in months, not years. Fix the leak, let it dry out fully, then paint.

1. Ignoring the substrate. Gypsum board, plaster, old oil-based paint — they all need different primers. Using one universal primer on everything is the #1 reason people repaint the same wall twice in two years.
