The #1 Reason Executive Resumes Get Rejected (It's Not What You Think)
Most executives assume their resume gets rejected because of gaps, job-hopping, or missing keywords. Wrong.
The real killer? You sound like everyone else.
After writing hundreds of executive resumes, here's the pattern I see over and over:
"Results-driven leader with 20+ years of experience" — so is every other VP applying
Listing responsibilities instead of outcomes — nobody cares what you were supposed to do
Burying the most impressive numbers three pages deep
Here's what actually works at the executive level:
Lead with a positioning statement, not an objective. You're not "seeking a challenging role." You're the person who turned around a $40M division in 18 months.
Quantify everything that matters. Revenue generated, costs cut, teams built, markets entered. If you can't put a number on it, rethink whether it belongs on page one.
Write for two audiences. Your resume has to pass ATS filters AND impress a human in 6 seconds. Most people optimize for one and ignore the other.
The executives who land interviews fast aren't necessarily more qualified — they're just better positioned on paper.
If you're in the market and your resume hasn't been updated in 2+ years, it's probably costing you interviews right now.
