5 resume mistakes that get college students instantly rejected from internships

I've reviewed 200+ college student resumes over the past year. The same mistakes keep showing up — and they're costing people interviews at companies that would've hired them.

1. Writing an "Objective" statement

Nobody cares that you're "a motivated student seeking an opportunity to grow." Replace it with a 2-line summary of what you've actually done.

2. Listing job duties instead of results

"Responsible for social media" tells me nothing. "Grew Instagram from 200 to 1,400 followers in 3 months" tells me everything.

3. Using a template from 2015

If your resume has a colored sidebar, a headshot, or a skill bar chart — it's getting filtered by ATS software before a human ever sees it.

4. Including high school achievements

Once you're in college, nobody cares about your high school GPA or that you were class treasurer. Replace with college projects, clubs, or freelance work.

5. Making it longer than 1 page

You're a student. One page. Period. If you can't fit it on one page, you're including things that don't matter.

I built a pack of ATS-friendly Canva resume templates specifically for college students applying to internships. Clean layouts, easy to customize, designed to actually get past the bots.
