The 48 hours after a failed payment 💳

Last post I said payment health is the loudest churn signal. Here's the part that matters: a failed charge isn't a cancellation. It's a countdown.

Most failed payments are expired cards, hit limits, or a bank flagging a foreign charge. The member still wants what you sell. But if nobody tells them, the retry fails too, access drops, and by the time they notice they've already adjusted to life without your whop. That's when it becomes a real churn.

What works inside the window:

Hour 0-2 — reach out while it's still a surprise to them. Not "your payment failed" in system-speak. Something like: "hey, your card bounced on the renewal — probably just expired. Here's the link to fix it." Short, human, one link.

Hour 2-24 — if no fix yet, one nudge. Different angle: remind them what they'd lose, not that they owe you. "You've got 3 unread drops in the room — didn't want you to lose access over a card thing."

Hour 24-48 — last touch, then stop. Past 48 hours you're not recovering a payment anymore, you're annoying someone. Move them to your win-back list and hit them with an offer in a couple weeks instead.

The hard part was never knowing what to say. It's knowing it happened at all — Whop fires the webhook, and if you're not watching, it's just another line in a log nobody reads.

That's the alert I built Keepwhoppin for:

What's your recovery flow look like? Anyone doing this with automations already? 👇

The 4 signals that predict a cancel 🔍

While building Keepwhoppin I had to answer one question precisely: what actually predicts a member cancelling? Four signals, ranked by how loud they are:

  1. Payment health (35%) — a failed charge is the loudest churn signal there is. Most cancels after a failed payment aren't decisions, they're unfixed cards. Catch it the day it happens and it's a save, not a churn.

  2. Activity recency (30%) — the member who's about to leave goes quiet first. Two weeks of silence almost always precedes the cancel button.

  3. Engagement trend (20%) — what matters is the drop against their OWN baseline. A member who went from daily to weekly is at more risk than one who was always monthly.

  4. Tenure (15%) — the first 30 days are the highest-risk window of any membership. If they don't build a habit by day 30, the second charge is where you lose them.

Keepwhoppin weighs these into one score per member, with the reasons spelled out in plain English — no black box. Free to see it on your own whop:

Curious what signal you watch that I'm missing 👇

Your members are churning silently. I built a radar for it. 📡

Hey everyone 👋

I just launched Keepwhoppin — a retention radar for whops. It watches your membership + payment events and tells you, in plain English, who's about to churn and why:

  • A churn-risk score for every member — payment health, activity drop-off, tenure, all explained, not hidden in a model

  • Failed-payment alerts the moment the webhook fires

  • A win-back list — everyone who cancelled in the last 30 days, ranked by value, while a re-join offer still works

  • A recovered-revenue ledger — every dunning save and win-back booked in real dollars, so you know what retention work actually returns

It's free to install (radar for your 50 highest-risk members), and the paid plans come with a 7-day free trial.

I'm building this in the open and would genuinely love feedback from other community owners - what would make this a no-brainer for your whop? Drop it below or DM me. 🙏

Just shipped Keepwhoppin - a retention radar for whops. It's in app store review now.

Most churn is silent. A member goes quiet for two weeks, their card fails once, and by the time you see the cancellation you've already lost them.

Keepwhoppin scores every member's churn risk from four signals - payment health, activity recency, engagement trend and tenure - and explains every score in plain English, e.g. "Payment failed 2 days ago - No activity in 16 days".

What you get: a member risk list ranked critical / watch / healthy, win-back candidates (everyone who churned in the last 30 days, ranked by value), and a recovered-revenue ledger that books every dunning save and win-back in real dollars.

It runs on Whop's native webhooks and installs in about 5 minutes. Live demo:

Question for other creators: when you notice a member has gone quiet, what's the first thing you actually do?
