The 60-Second Pre-Ride Check That Could Save Your Life

Most riders skip this. Don't be most riders.

Before every single ride, run T-CLOCS — the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's pre-ride checklist:

Letter

Check

What to look for

T

Tires & Wheels

Pressure, tread depth, cracks, spokes

C

Controls

Levers, cables, throttle snap-back, pedals

L

Lights & Electrics

Headlight, brake lights, turn signals, horn

O

Oil & Fluids

Oil level, coolant, brake fluid, fuel

C

Chassis

Frame, suspension, chain tension & lube

S

Stands

Side stand retracts fully, spring tension

Pro tip: Check your tire pressure when they're cold (before riding). Hot tires read 2-4 PSI (0.14–0.28 bar) higher and will give you a false reading.

This takes 60 seconds once it's habit. That's 60 seconds vs. your front tire blowing at highway speed because you missed a sidewall crack.

3 Cornering Mistakes New Riders Make (And How to Fix Them)

Corners are where new riders get scared — and where experienced riders have the most fun. Here's what separates them:

❌ Mistake #1: Looking at the ground in front of your wheel

Your bike goes where your eyes go. This is not a metaphor — it's physics. Target fixation is the #1 cause of running wide.

Fix: Look through the corner to where you want to exit. Turn your head, not just your eyes.

❌ Mistake #2: Braking mid-corner

Grabbing the brakes while leaned over stands the bike up and sends you straight — usually into oncoming traffic or off the road.

Fix: All braking happens before the corner. Slow in, smooth through, power out. If you entered too fast, lean more and trust the tires — they have more grip than you think.

❌ Mistake #3: Tensing up on the bars

Death-gripping the handlebars fights the bike's natural steering. You end up overriding the bike's geometry.

Fix: Light grip. Elbows bent. Let the bike do what it's designed to do. Push on the inside bar (countersteering) and let the bike settle into the lean.

The golden rule of cornering: Slow, Look, Press, Roll.

  1. Slow — brake before the turn

  2. Look — head and eyes through the exit

  3. Press — countersteer to initiate lean

  4. Roll — smooth throttle through and out
