The 3 mistakes every beginner boxer makes (and how to fix them)
Most people who try boxing for the first time make the same three mistakes. I've coached hundreds of beginners and it's almost always these:
1. Dropping your hands after every punch
You throw a jab, your hand drops to your waist. Now your chin is wide open. The fix: every punch returns to your guard position. Every. Single. Time. Practice shadow boxing in front of a mirror and watch your hands.
2. Leaning back to avoid punches
It feels natural but it destroys your balance and kills your counter-punching ability. Instead, learn to slip — small head movements, weight stays centered over your feet.
3. Trying to punch hard before punching correctly
Power comes from technique, not muscle. If your mechanics are off, throwing harder just reinforces bad habits. Slow down, nail the form, and the power comes naturally.
