What Most People Don’t Understand About Buying Cars From Japan

One thing I’ve learned after years of sourcing vehicles from Japanese dealer auctions is this:

The auction sheet is only the beginning.

A lot of people overseas see a grade, a few photos, and think they understand the car. Unfortunately, that’s where many expensive mistakes begin.

The reality is that Japanese auctions move extremely quickly, and unless someone is physically attending, inspecting, reading between the lines, and understanding the patterns behind certain auction houses and grading styles, there is still a huge amount unknown about a vehicle.

A “Grade 4” does not automatically mean a perfect car.
A clean-looking car in photos does not guarantee a clean car mechanically.
And a cheap hammer price rarely reflects the real final cost once shipping, transport, taxes, compliance, and registration are included.

This is why we built Rising Sun differently.

Why Our Inspections Cost More

One thing people often notice immediately is that our inspection process is sometimes more expensive than many exporters or agents.

That is intentional.

Most inspections in Japan are extremely basic:

  • a quick walk around

  • a few photos

  • maybe a short opinion of what the client wants to hear, to seal a deal.

  • sometimes the inspector never even drives the vehicle

Our inspections are designed for buyers who actually care about what arrives months later.

A proper inspection can involve:

  • several hours of travel across Japan

  • physically attending the auction site

  • paint meter readings

  • underbody inspection

  • cold start checks

  • idle quality

  • clutch or transmission behaviour

  • interior wear analysis

  • aftermarket modification checks

  • rust assessment

  • verifying previous repairs

  • cross-checking grading inconsistencies

  • road testing where possible

Many inspections include over 300 detailed photos and videos, because we want clients to see the car as closely as possible before making a decision.

That level of work takes real time, travel, experience, and responsibility.

Why This Community Exists

After years of dealing with misinformation, unrealistic expectations, hidden problems, and poor communication within the export industry, I wanted to build something more transparent.

This community gives members a closer look into how the Japanese market actually works.

Inside, we share:

  • live auction alerts

  • exposed grading sheet breakdowns

  • insider footage from auctions and dealerships

  • upcoming market opportunities

  • future classic discussions

  • weekly market reports

  • shipping and logistics updates

  • real examples of problem cars and hidden issues

  • sourcing advice from direct experience

Most importantly, members gain direct access to our team in Japan.

Member Benefits

Because members are already part of the Rising Sun community, we can often offer:

  • reduced sourcing fees

  • discounted inspection pricing

  • priority access to incoming stock

  • earlier auction alerts

  • faster communication and support

This isn’t designed to be a massive generic car group.

The goal is to create a genuine insider network for enthusiasts, collectors, dealers, and buyers who want proper access to Japan’s automotive market with realistic information and complete transparency.

We do this every day, directly from Japan.

Welcome to Rising Sun Exports.
