5 things academy scouts actually look for (that most young players ignore)

I've talked to scouts, coaches, and former academy players. Here's what they consistently say separates the kids who make it from the ones who don't:

1. First touch under pressure. Not your first touch in training with no defender. Your first touch when someone is breathing down your neck. Practice receiving with a wall behind you, forcing you to play forward.

2. Off-the-ball movement. Most young players stand and watch. Scouts notice the kid who's constantly scanning, checking shoulders, and creating passing lanes before the ball arrives.

3. Body language after mistakes. Every player makes errors. Scouts watch what you do in the 5 seconds AFTER the mistake. Do you drop your head, or do you sprint to recover?

4. Coachability. Can you take a tactical instruction and apply it within the same session? This is trainable. Start by writing down one thing your coach tells you after every training and actively working on it.

5. Physical consistency. Not just being fit for one game — being fit enough to maintain intensity for an entire season. That means taking your sleep, nutrition, and recovery as seriously as your ball work.

Talent opens doors. These habits keep you in the room.

If this resonates, I'm building something for young players who are serious about going pro — structured programs, weekly challenges, and a community of players who are all grinding toward the same goal.
