5 pieces of safety gear warehouse workers skip (and why it costs them)

I've worked in warehouses and industrial sites for years. The gear people skip is always the same — and the injuries are always preventable.

1. Cut-resistant gloves

Most box-cutting injuries happen in the first week on the job. A $12 pair of A4-rated gloves prevents 90% of them.

2. Steel-toe boots

"My sneakers are fine." Until a pallet drops. Composite or steel toe — doesn't matter. Just wear them.

3. Hi-vis vests

Forklift operators can't avoid what they can't see. Class 2 minimum if you're anywhere near a loading dock.

4. Ear protection

Warehouse noise averages 85-95 dB. That's hearing damage territory after 8 hours. Foam plugs cost 50 cents. Hearing aids cost $5,000.

5. Proper eye protection

Dust, debris, shrink wrap cutters — your eyes are exposed more than you think. Anti-fog safety glasses should be standard issue.
