Why we built a whole merch line around a cat being scared of a cucumber
We started Scaredy Cat with one tee — a startled cat, drawn simple, no caption needed. Turns out people didn't just want the shirt, they wanted the character. That's the part a lot of meme merch gets wrong: they slap a viral image on a blank and call it a day. The meme dies in a month, the shirt sits in a drawer.
What actually holds up is the feeling behind the meme — that universal "why am I like this" energy. So instead of chasing the next viral clip, we built a small lineup around one consistent character: a hoodie for when you want to disappear into a hood and vibe, a mug for people who are "anxious but make it aesthetic," and a sticker pack because half our buyers just want to decorate a water bottle and call it self-expression.
If you're building merch off a meme or a mascot, our take: pick a character, not a moment. Moments expire. Characters get collected.
